The Missouri Clean Water AmeriCorps Members at MRCN are currently making rain barrels to sell to the public. Rain barrels reduce the negative effects of stormwater runoff and help conserve water by capturing water coming off rooftops. It helps us keep excess water out of the stormwater sewer systems and keeps rain runoff from carrying pollutants into nearby waterways.
 
Rain barrels can hold water to provide water during dry weather or you can set them to slowly release the water over a 1-2 day period when the rains have subsided. The slower the release of rain will allow the water to seep into the soil and can be used by plants. Collected rainwater is better for plants because it is not chlorinated (although it is mildly acidic), which helps the plants take up important minerals from the soil
